Welcome to Minnesota Lawyer's 2008 online judicial election guide, revised and updated for the general election. Minnesota Lawyer, the state’s leading information source for legal professionals, has created this site to help voters educate themselves on the judicial races.

Statewide Appellate Races

There are three contested appellate court races that will appear on the November ballot – two for seats on the Minnesota Supreme Court and one for a seat on the Minnesota Court of Appeals. The following are the three appellate races that will appear on ballots statewide:

  • Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Paul Anderson faces a challenge from 9th District referee Tim Tingelstad.
  • Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Lorie Skjerven Gildea faces a challenge from Hennepin County District Court Judge Deborah Hedlund.
  • Minnesota Court of Appeals Judge Terri Stoneburner faces a challenge from International Falls attorney Daniel Griffith.

Local District Court Races

The vast majority of District Court judges (about 90 percent) are running unopposed. There are a total of nine contested District Court races in six Districts. (Only the District Court races for the District where you live will appear on your ballot.(Click here to find your district if you don’t know it.) The following are the contested district Court races:

1st District

-- Judge Joseph Carter faces a challenge from Rice County prosecutor Nathaniel L. Rietz.

2nd District (Ramsey County)

-- Children's Law Center of Minnesota Executive Director Gail Chang Bohr and Ramsey County prosecutor Howard Orenstein square off to fill a seat left open by the retirement of Judge John Finley.

3rd District

-- Judge Lawrence E. Agerter faces a challenge from attorney Anthony Moosbrugger.

4th District (Hennepin County)

-- Judge Philip D. Bush faces a challenge from attorney Alan Eugene Link. -- Family court referee David Piper and Hennepin County prosecutor Jane Ranum vie to fill the seat of retiring Judge Thomas Wexler. -- Judge James T. Swenson faces a challenge from attorney Thomas F. Haeg.

8th District

-- Judge Randall J. Slieter faces a challenge from prosecutor Glen M. (Jake) Jacobsen.

10th Judicial District

-- Judge Nancy Logering faces her second challenge from attorney Luke Stellpflug (the prior one was when she was last up for election six years ago). -- Judge Robert P. Varco faces a challenge from attorney John P. Dehan.
