Candidacy Questions:
1. Why do you want to be a judge?
My decision to seek election to the Minnesota Supreme Court is neither motivated
by personal ambition nor by political emotion. I greatly appreciate the opportunity
to serve as a Magistrate for the Ninth Judicial District. I enjoy the life that
comes with living in a beautiful Northern Minnesota community. But life is not
merely about seeking personal happiness, and I am prepared to answer a call
to serve the people of Minnesota at a critical point in our history.
2. Why should voters select you rather than your opponent in the upcoming election?
Every Supreme Court Justice carries a worldview that will greatly affect the decisions they make. I share the worldview of our founding fathers, who believed in God, and the Truth of His Word, and who understood that God's Truth is the foundation upon which our Constitutions were built. It is critical that this worldview be present on our highest Court as it faces issues that will define our families, our educational system, and our religious freedoms for generations to come.
3. What experience have you had in dealing with the court on which you wish
to sit?
I have successfully argued cases before the Minnesota Court of Appeals as an Assistance Beltrami County Attorney, but have never had the opportunity to appear before the State Supreme Court. In over seven years of experience on the bench, I have not had an order reversed by a higher court.
4. What are the major issues facing the court on which you wish to serve? How can these realistically be addressed?
The State Supreme Court will face many important issues in the upcoming years, however, the issue that is of greatest concerned to me is the direction our courts are taking us in the area of "separation of church and state." I believe that the original intent of the State and Federal Constitutions has been ignored and that we are moving in a direction where the religion of nonbelief is now preferred over religion based upon a belief in God, and the Truth of His Word. 5. Do you believe it is good policy to discuss disputed legal and political issues during a judicial campaign? If so, what issues do you plan to discuss and why. If not, why shouldn't such issues be discussed?
I believe that electing judges is an important restraint against judicial activism. I also believe that elections can only be meaningful if judicial candidates are allowed to share their beliefs with the people. I intend to inform the voters of my worldview, because it is very relevant to the position I seek. I believe that judicial elections should remain non-partisan, and I believe judicial candidates must be very careful to maintain the appearance of impartiality. I will do my best to walk this narrow path.
6. What else, if anything, would you like the voters to know about your candidacy that you have not discussed so far?
I have tremendous respect for our State's highest Court, and for the men and women who currently serve this State as Supreme Court Justices. I believe that in this time of great social, moral and political divisions the only resolution will come through the return of God's Truth to our public institutions. Our highest Courts are greatly responsible for the people's confusion and discord. The worldview that I will carry to the Supreme Court is consistent with that held by our history's greatest leaders, and its presence is needed at this critical time in our State and Nation.
