Candidacy Questions:
1. Why do you want to be a judge?
First of all, let me say that I believe I have proven my sincerity to become
a judge by the consistency in which I have run for judge. Mine has not been
a one-time opponent or one issue candidacy. I have consistently participated
in each judicial election because I strongly believe in public service, involvement
in my government, and public choice. I also believe in the modernization undertaken
by the Hennepin County Court system, and I desire to be part of further efforts
in that direction. Finally, I think that one should always strive to advance
in one's profession.
2. Why should voters select you rather than your opponent in the upcoming election?
I have come to the conclusion that a judicial campaign is not the proper time to downgrade an opponent's record or make other negative statements about an opponent. Voter's should select me not because of what I might say about my opponent, but rather because I have the integrity, maturity, civility, impartiality, and willingness to work hard as a District Court Judge. Simply stated, it is now my turn.
3. What experience have you had in dealing with the court on which you wish to sit?
I have been engaged in the private practice of family law, criminal defense, and various other types of law for the past 10 years. I have appeared in all 7 Metro Area Courts, as well as numerous courts in more rural counties. I have also appeared before the Minnesota Court of Appeals. In addition, I am qualified as a family and civil mediator.
4. What are the major issues facing the court on which you wish to serve? How can these realistically be addressed?
One major issue facing the Hennepin County Court is the inadequate number of judges and support personnel. An almost unbelievable number of people use the Hennepin County Court System every year, and the resultant caseload assigned to each Judge is very high on a relative basis. I believe most judges do an outstanding job in handling their case load, but there can be no doubt that as the number of cases increase the amount of time and care spent on each case must decrease. Realistically, the legislature must be made more cognizant of the magnitude of the situation.
5. Do you believe it is good policy to discuss disputed legal and political issues during a judicial campaign? If so, what issues do you plan to discuss and why. If not, why shouldn't such issues be discussed?
I believe in judicial elections, free speech, and the voter's absolute right to make an informed and rational voting decision. However, I do not believe that a
judicial campaign is the time and place for a full-blown political ruckus! I am delighted to respond to voter inquiries concerning my general views on most issues. Nevertheless, I will certainly refrain from stating how I would rule on a specific case or set of facts, and I will not divulge privileged information.
6. What else, if anything, would you like the voters to know about your candidacy that you have not discussed so far?
That I fully and completely support the jury system. That I am absolutely committed to decide cases impartially and without regard to my political and personal beliefs. That I believe my considerable legal volunteer work representing poor and disadvantaged people has given me insights that will greatly aid me on the bench. That I am committed to the compatible goals of providing the taxpayers with good value for their money as well as treating litigants such that they believe they were fairly treated regardless of the outcome of their case. And finally that I consider it a very high honor and privilege to be chosen to serve as a district court judge.
