Appellate lawyers endorse incumbent appellate judges
by Minnesota Lawyer staff
More than 115 experienced appellate lawyers have signed on to a “Statement of Support” for sitting appellate court judges running in Minnesota’s contested judicial races this year — Supreme Court Justices Paul H. Anderson and Lorie Skjerven Gildea and Court of Appeals Judge Terri Stoneburner.
Anderson and Gildea will face off against their challengers in tomorrow’s primary. The two attorneys seeking to unseat Anderson are Alan Lawrence Nelson, a first-timer on the judicial election scene, and Tim Tingelstad, a judicial magistrate from Bemidji who’s run twice before.
Gildea is being challenged by Hennepin County District Court Judge Deborah Hedlund, Golden Valley attorney Jill Clark and assistant state public defender Richard Gallo. This is Gildea’s first election.
Stoneburner’s seat is being sought by International Falls attorney Dan Griffith, who has made unsuccessful bids for the Court of Appeals twice before.
Minneapolis appellate lawyer Charles Lundberg spearheaded the effort to enlist other appellate attorneys to support the incumbent appellate jurists. Lundberg has organized support from the state’s appellate bar for sitting judges facing challengers since the 2002 election.
