by Minnesota Lawyer Staff Reporter
In celebration of Law Day, the Ramsey County Bar Association will award Julian Zweber, the Ramsey County District Court Interpreter Program and Centro Legal, Inc. with the 2008 Law Day Awards.
The Law Day Awards presentation will take place during the RCBA’s annual meeting on May 13.
Zweber will receive the Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award; Kozoua Yang, on behalf of the Ramsey County District Court Interpreter Program, will receive the Liberty Bell Award; and Tom Romero and Gloria Contreras-Edin, on behalf of Centro Legal, will receive the Excellence in Diversity Award.
The Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award is given each year to a lawyer who demonstrates substantial length of service to the bar and the community. Zweber has been in private practice in St. Paul since 1981 and has served on numerous committees and sections of the RCBA and the Minnesota State Bar Association.
The Liberty Bell Award is given annually to a nonlawyer who has encouraged respect for the law and the courts, and contributed to the effective functioning of our institutions of government. The Ramsey County District Court Interpreter Program, managed by Kazoua Yang, provides interpreter services in more than 50 languages. Last year, the program provided interpreter services in approximately 6,000 cases.
The Excellence in Diversity Award is given to an organization or individual who has a history of encouraging, supporting or promoting diversity and equal opportunities for members of historically underrepresented groups. Centro Legal, the largest Latino nonprofit legal institution in the Midwest, seeks to empower the community through legal education and the promotion of civil engagement.
